James Baroud Roodtop tents
Design philosophy
James Baroud tents have the addition of Offroad Tents in their name for a reason. Right from the start, the tents were developed for off-road use. All fastenings, hinges and locks are designed to withstand many years and thousands of kilometers on vibrating slopes without damage. Nothing is undersized here in order to reduce production costs to the detriment of the customer. This can also be seen in small details such as the mounting brackets for mounting on the cross members. Even those who only transport their tent on the road benefit from the stable and durable construction.
Anyone who is on the road off-road cannot always choose the weather and the place to stay. That is why the tents are constructed in such a way that they can easily withstand heavy rain and cold in Iceland as well as violent sandstorms and high temperatures in the Sahara.
James Baroud (Porto, Portugal) is so convinced of the quality of his hard shell tents that the manufacturer grants a five-year guarantee on the roof shell, tent fabric and mechanics. Spare parts, including complete tent fabrics, are also available for many years.
Models
The James Baroud hard shell tents are available in three opening variants:
With hard shells that open in a triangle shape and a large interior height. Lots of space to move. Very easy and quick to open and close.
With hard shells that open in parallel and a wonderful all-round view. Perfect for families with children.
As a combination of both variants. Offers sufficient leg room even in the smaller standard size.
Some models are also available with an optional loading area for e.g. a storage bag or a spare tire.
You can find which loadbars you need, under "Attachments"!
Sizes
All tents are available in the standard size with the internal dimensions 198 * 140 cm and as XL versions with the internal dimensions 220 * 157 cm. The Grand Raid model has an internal dimension of 198 * 157 cm and is therefore only wider, but not longer than the basic version.
The 157 cm wide tents offer enough sleeping space for two adults with one or two small children. Tents with the suffix XL with an inner length of 220 cm also offer enough space for tall people. Families will also appreciate the space gained, as it can be used as storage space e.g. for bags, shoes, daywear, wash bags or toys.
Furnishing
Three entrances All roof tents are fully equipped and have spacious double-layer entrance doors with insect screens on three sides. The doors can be opened from below or above and closed completely thanks to the Velcro strip on the lower edge. The ladder can be hung on both sides.
Panoramic windows The generous panoramic windows make the James Baroud hard shell tents unique on the market. Large parts of the tent fabric can be opened and allow incredible views from the tent. Only separated from the outside world by fly screens, the interior feels much larger. In order to protect privacy, the lower edge of the window rises slightly.
High-quality tent fabric Due to the ingenious construction of the roof tents, the tent fabric as a whole is connected to the roof shells with a circumferential piping rail. This makes the tents waterproof and the fabric can easily be replaced in the event of damage. The very high quality polyester canvas All Season Touring ™ from the Dutch specialist Ten-Cate is comparatively light, but still strong and durable. The microporous six-layer acrylic coating makes it waterproof, breathable and weatherproof. It is also dirt-repellent and easy to clean.
Good climate A maintenance-free, solar-powered fan ensures a good climate. It provides fresh air in summer and transports the moist air that leads to condensation outside in cold weather.
Since summer 2018, the black side ventilation panels shown in most photos have been omitted. These came from the previous generation of tents without panorama windows and made it easier to exchange air when opening and closing a tent in which all doors were tightly closed with zippers and Velcro, an unrealistic scenario.
Roof shells The roof shells are made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP). Thermal insulation built into the bottom shell reduces the cooling of the lying surface at low temperatures, reduces condensation and contributes to pleasant sleeping comfort. Some models are equipped with a recessed storage area on the roof. The tents are opened quickly and easily using gas pressure springs.
Interior The comfortable, high-density foam mattress has a removable, washable cotton cover. The upper roof shell is lined with a textile insulation material for heat and noise insulation and provided with a large storage net. A rechargeable LED torch is used for lighting.
Ladder All tents come with a telescopic aluminum ladder that is adjustable in length and can also be comfortably used barefoot. The ladder is securely hooked into special brackets attached to the sides of the tent. The ladder is supplied with a protective cover so that the ladder can be transported inside the tent when not in use. The maximum length of the ladder is 244 cm.

All hard shell tents are delivered with white roof shells (RAL 9003). On request and at an additional cost, roof shells are available in black (RAL 9005), gray (RAL 7046) or in one of the other 210 RAL Classic colors.

When closed, the tent has a height of 33,5 cm. The weight is approx. 68 kg.
We, Genesis Import GmbH, are the main importers of James Baroud for Germany and Austria. All models can be viewed and tested in our large tent exhibition in Schwarzach am Main (east of Würzburg). Common tent models are usually available from stock. However, we recommend that you order in good time, especially during the holiday season, in order to avoid waiting times.
Care instructions
Hard shell tent
All James Baroud roof tents have a gel coat that needs to be cleaned, you can use normal household products such as washing up liquid. If the tent stays on the roof all year round, it should be protected from all UV rays, otherwise the color could fade - here you should regularly clean and protect the tent with car polish. As with a car, many small mosquitoes often stay behind when driving, here it helps to clean the hard-shell tent with a normal insect repellent. Here it is still important to note that the surface is not cleaned with aggressive agents as these remove the protective layer.
Canvas
The fabric inside and around the tent is easy to keep clean. The Tencate material is made of polyester fibers and has multiple acrylic coatings. this leads to easier cleaning through simpler means. Minor stains can be easily removed with dish soap and a cloth. However, if the stains are more stubborn, we recommend a fabric cleaner, which should be available from any normal camping shop. It is possible that the seams of the tent will loosen slightly after long use and thus become leaky - you should apply a seam sealer to the affected areas to tighten the seams again.
Solar panel & fasteners
The solar fan runs on solar energy and has a small battery inside that supplies it with energy for up to 7 hours. In order to protect the solar panel for a long time, it is provided with a plastic coating. The solar panel should be cleaned properly every 3-4 months with washing-up liquid - but here[JH2] please do not use any aggressive or alcoholic cleaning agents, otherwise the plastic could break. For further protection we recommend applying a plastic gel. It is just as important to regularly treat the locks and joints with a lubricant.
How do I store my roof tent correctly?
In order to keep the roof tent always ready for use for the season, depending on whether you are a winter or summer camper, you have to observe a few rules when storing it.
The first and highest priority is - the less moisture there is in the roof tent, the better - of course this does not apply to camping when you close the roof tent for a short time when it rains, but rather when you close the tent for a "long" time.
Store the roof tent correctly - before packing away, you should always air the tent carefully so that the moisture is gone. The mattress must be removed before storage. Once the tent is down, the mattress removed and aired for a few days you can close it and pull the James Baroud cover that was supplied over the closed tent. Either you store the tent in the same position as it was on the roof, or you put it on its side.
